Search Strategies
Use these search strategies as you begin your search on the Internet.
Don't forget to cite your sources in your bibliography !
(See Section on Bibliography & Citing Sources)

1) Formulate questions (what do you want to know about the topic ?)
2) Identify keywords or terms that could describe your concept.
3) Choose a Search Engine or Internet Directory to start your search.

 

Simple Search Tips
Capitalize all names and titles   Example: Martin Luther King
Use double quotation marks around words or put hyphens between words that you want to appear together   Example: "White House" or White-House
Put a plus sign before words you would like in a document.   Example: football +Packers
Put a minus sign to make sure the word does not appear in your search.   Example: recipes -broccoli
Use a period after a keyword to get an exact match.   Example: learn. (not learning or learners)

daphne.palomar.edu/TGSEARCH/ This is a nice guide to the major search engines such as Alta Vista, Web Crawler, Lycos, etc. It explains how each of the major search engines works and gives you tips on what boolean operators and limiters to use to help you search more efficiently.
www.blueangels.net  Complete list of search engines from A to Z. Has links to search engines, meta search engines, people search, as well as information to help you search for information.
www.electricteacher.com/search.htm Has a nice list of links to search engines, metasearch engines, Internet resources, etc. Nicely organized to use for students and teachers.
www.monash.com/spidap.html Helps you understand how search engines work. Walks you through steps to explain how you can use search engine more efficiently on the web. Organized reading about search engines. More appropriate for 6th grade and up.
www.noodletools.com/noodlequest A web tool to help you refine what type of information you are looking for and guides you using question prompts to give you a list of links you can try to find answers for your Internet search.
searchenginewatch.com This site lets you know about the latest search engine developments. it also regulary rates the best search engines and includes a section on Kids' search engine.

Learn the Net - Nice site that walks you through the basics of the Internet. Put together by a non-profit company.

Surf the Web: Learn the Net - Nice introduction to the Internet. Has great graphics to help you understand the Internet.

Web Teacher - This is a great self paced tutorial that walks you through anything from e-mail, Internet safety, to web page design. It's like having your own private tutor.

Yahooligan's Teaching Internet Literacy - a comprehensive guide that includes a section on teacher Internet literacy.
